What is the main message in Colossians 3?

What was Paul’s message to Colossians 3? In Colossians 3, Paul explains how Christians are to allow Christ inside them to shine in their lives. What does the Bible say about Colossians 3? Colossians 3 is full of practical steps for Christians living.

What is the theme of Colossians 3?

Paul continues the main theme of the book of Colossians – The mystery of God. We saw in Colossians 1 that Paul established Jesus as the supremacy over everything and revealed the mystery of God, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

In Colossians 2, Paul explained that Jesus is the Godhead bodily and Christ, as the Godhead nourishes all the ligaments and bones of the church, which is the body of Christ. In continuation to the same theme, Paul explains in Colossians 3 that when we were baptized, we were dead with Christ and were raised with Him, and now we are hidden with Christ.

Paul explains how we need to put off the old man that was full of sin and put on the new man who sets his mind on the GodHead (Christ) and how when that is done, there is order in the family and work-life.

Colossians 3 can be divided into two main themes.

  1. Old Man vs. New Man (Colossians 3:1-17)
  2. Family Order and Work Order (Colossians 3:18-25)

We’ll discuss each theme in detail in this easy-to-understand Colossians 3 commentary bible study.

Old Man vs. New Man (Commentary and Bible Study Colossians 3:1-17)

Commentary and Bible Study of Colossians 3:1-17 can be further divided into subsections. Each section explains why it is important to let go of the old man, what are the deeds of the old man and what are the deeds of the new man. Paul explains everything beautifully. Let’s discuss each section in detail.

Colossians 3:1-3 Commentary and Bible Study.

Colossians 3:1-3 (NKJV) – “If you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”

In the first three verses, Paul continues his message from Colossians 3, where he lays the foundation of Jesus being the Godhead bodily and what baptism means spiritually. Through baptism, we buried our old self, which was dead in Christ, and were raised with Christ.

Paul explains what this means and what we should be doing as new man now hidden with Christ in God. Let’s discuss each of these verses in depth.

Colossians 3:1 Commentary and Bible Study

In verse 1, Paul says that if we were raised with Christ, we should seek those above things. Firstly, Christians need to understand what it means to be raised with Christ. Unless we understand this, it would be hard to understand why Paul tells us to seek the things above.

Understanding our resurrection with Christ comes from the belief that Christ was indeed raised from the dead 2000 years ago for you. So when we take baptism, we agree that we are dead in Christ and are now raised with Christ. This now becomes our new identity. Our new identity is Christ inside us and not us living anymore because we are made alive with Christ. This means that if Christ isn’t in you, you are not alive.

Since it is not us but Christ alive in us, we seek the things above! Why? Because Christ is seated ABOVE at the right hand of God as we speak. It goes without saying that we will seek what we belong to. We belong to Christ who is above, yet at the same time, we are alive with Christ here on earth because He is in us right now at the same time.

Unless we believe that we belong to Christ, we will not seek the things above. If you are struggling to seek the things above, it is time to introspect your spiritual life to see if Christ is really inside you in this journey on earth. Are you living in your true identity in Christ?

Colossians 3:2 commentary and Bible Study

In verse 2, Paul advises the Colossians church to SET their mind on things above. He says this because unless Christians set their mind on things above, the principalities and the rulers of this world will work their best towards pulling Christians to worldly things or being carnal-minded.

What are worldly things? What does carnally minded mean? Paul says going back to your old man or your old self before you accepted Christ means indulging in worldly things or being carnally minded. Indulging in worldly things will lead you into a path of destruction. That is what the principalities and rulers want.

But Jesus came to destroy the enemy’s plans and get you back on track by giving Himself as a sacrifice plus living inside you right now. Paul covers those worldly things in verses 5-10, which we will discuss in detail.

But, before we get there, we need to understand what it means to set your mind. Setting your mind means focusing with intention, for example, setting the thermostat to the desired temperature. When you do that, the thermostat will work towards getting the desired result. In the same way, you need to set your mind on the things above. But, putting your mind to it is not as easy as setting a thermostat.

Then, how do we set our hearts and minds on things above? Let’s take the same example of setting the thermostat. The point is not about setting the thermostat, but WHY do you want to set the thermostat? In the same way, if you set your mind on the things above, your INTENT behind setting your mind is what should be the driving force.

If you set your mind because everyone is doing it or because that is what you are meant to do, then it is more of a mechanical thing and not taking ownership of your intent. Instead, your intent should be to calibrate heavenly thoughts.

What are heavenly thoughts? What is heavenly-minded? Letting Christ in you shine no matter what is being heavenly-minded. So, how do you set your mind on heavenly things? How do I change my mindset according to the Bible? The answer is to become a kingdom-minded person.

Who is a kingdom-minded person? A person whose thoughts revolve around Christ day in and day out. A person who wants to become more like Jesus every day, rooted, built up, and head over heels in love with Jesus, is kingdom-minded. When that becomes your driving force, you will be able to set your mind on the things above and keep it set!

Colossians 3:3 Commentary and Bible Study

In verse 3, Paul says that we died and our life is hidden with Christ in God. This means that it is not ‘us’ but Christ alive in us. This is part of the redemption plan because God does not see us anymore but sees Christ as we are hidden with Christ.

The burden of our sins was so heavy that we couldn’t reconcile with God without Jesus. God does not see us directly but in Jesus, as we are dead, but He is alive. That qualifies us to be in His presence directly and to be inherited in God’s kingdom.

Christians need to keep this at the forefront of their core belief and understand that they owe their existence on earth and in heaven to Jesus.

Colossians 3 Life Application: verses 1-3

What can we learn from Colossians 3:1-3? We can learn four life application lessons from this passage explaining the first theme of Colossians 3: Old man vs. new man.

  1. Christians should seek and set their minds on the things above because Christ is seated ABOVE on the right hand of God.
  2. Setting your mind means focusing with the intention of becoming a kingdom-minded person.
  3. God does not see us directly but sees us in Jesus as we are dead and hidden with Christ.
  4. Are you struggling to seek the things above, then introspect your spiritual life to see if Christ is really inside you? Are you living in your true identity in Christ?

Colossians 3:4 Commentary and Bible Study

Colossians 3:4 (NKJV) – “When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.”

Paul made a spectacular statement in verse 4. This is the most important verse in Colossians chapter 3, as everything mentioned in this chapter points back to this verse. The idea of Christians dying and rising with Jesus and hidden in Christ means that Christ, who is our life, is to appear so that we also appear with Him in glory.

This is meant to happen not only when we get to heaven but also while we live on this earth. So, therefore, we need to live like heaven on this earth and like heavenly beings and constantly work towards letting Christ appear through our lives because Christ in us is the hope of glory.

Jesus is the GodHead to us as the body of Christ - Paul's explanation of how Jesus the Godhead bodily makes us heavenly beings
Jesus our Godhead bodily

Colossians 3 Life Application: verse 4

What can we learn from Colossians 3:4? We can learn two life application lessons from this passage explaining the first theme of Colossians 3: Old man vs. new man.

  1. The idea of Christians dying and rising with Jesus and hidden in Christ means that Christ, who is our life, is to appear so that we also appear with Him in glory.
  2. Every Christian’s focus should be to live like heavenly beings on this earth and constantly work towards letting Christ appear through our lives because Christ in us is the hope of glory.

Colossians 3:5-7 Commentary and Bible Study

Colossians 3:5-7 (NKJV) – “Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.”

In continuation to verse 4, Paul tells the Colossian church to put to death the members of this earth. Although we are dead in Christ, we are still alive on this earth in the flesh. As discussed in verse 2, the principalities of this world will keep trying to get us to live in the flesh or carnally minded and will entice us for worldly things.

What are worldly things? What does carnally minded mean? Paul lists the things of this world in verse 5. Paul says that fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness are the things of this earth. If you are involved in any of these things, repenting and asking God for forgiveness are very important. But, if you think you do not indulge in any of these things.

But the point that Paul is making here is in the last part of verse 5. He calls all these things idolatry. Idolatry does not only mean worshiping idols made of stone but also anything that is given more importance than God. In other words, anything that is done in disobedience to God is idolatry.

The things that Paul stated were a cause of concern in the Colossians church. People thought that they could believe in Christ and continue to sin. When Christ is in you, there is no place for sin. Christ is pure, holy, without blame, without sin, and you should let Christ shine inside you by putting to death the things of the earth.

In verse 6, Paul says that when we indulge in the things of the earth, the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience. In this context, we can say that idolatry is disobedience. Paul reminds the Colossians church in verse 7 that they used to walk in disobedience before accepting Christ, but now they should not do that as their identity has changed. Their identity now is in Christ.

Living in the identity of Christ is not just about living a victorious life materialistically but living a victorious life spiritually, which includes living without sin. Living without sin is something that we need to work towards every day. The battle of death is won by Jesus, but the battle of your carnal mind to lead a sinless life needs to be won by you by putting to death the things of this earth. You cannot do this on your own; you will need the help of the Holy Spirit.

Another way to think about these listed sins is to understand that they are corrupting YOUR body, YOUR mind, and YOUR spirit. Committing these sins are sinning against God and yourself. These sins overpower YOU when you do not fully live in the understanding that CHRIST IS IN YOU. When you set your mind to live in this truth, you will find it easier to put the desires of this flesh to death.

Colossians 3 Life Application: verses 5-7

What can we learn from Colossians 3:4? We can learn six life application lessons from this passage explaining the first theme of Colossians 3: Old man vs. new man.

  1. The principalities of this world will keep trying to get Christians to live in the flesh or be carnally minded by enticing Christians to indulge in worldly things.
  2. Christians should not indulge in fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, or covetousness. If indulging in any of these things, repent and ask God for forgiveness.
  3. These sins are considered idolatry which means exalting themselves against God or giving more importance than God.
  4. The battle of death is won by Jesus, but the battle of your carnal mind to lead a sinless life needs to be won by you by putting to death the things of this earth.
  5. Living in the identity of Christ is not just about living a victorious life materialistically but living a victorious life spiritually, which includes living without sin.
  6. Living without sin is something that Christians need to work towards every day by taking the help of the Holy Spirit.
  7. The listed sins corrupt YOUR body, YOUR mind, and YOUR spirit. These sins overpower YOU when you do not fully live in the understanding that CHRIST IS IN YOU.

Colossians 3:8-11 Commentary and Bible Study

Colossians 3:8-11(NKJV) – “8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, 11 where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.”

In verse 8, Paul tells the Colossians church to put off old things. He is saying that they should take the initiative and put off the things he lists. We can understand the words “putting off” as putting aside or putting to death. To be more specific, to put off your old man.

Paul says that we ourselves should put off anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, and filthy language out of our mouths. These might not seem a big deal, but they are a big deal in the eyes of God. These are the sins committed against people.

We see in verse 11 that Paul is saying that there is no Greek or Jew or slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all. Paul says this is so that we don’t sin against people but to love them, as the second commandment given by Jesus.

Paul explains that when we see Christ in everyone, we will not hate them but love them. Instead, we have anger towards people because we are focused on seeing the flaws and do not look for Jesus inside them.

In verse 9, Paul tells the Colossians church not to lie to one another. Hasn’t lying become part of many people’s day-to-day life? Yet, lying is something that God hates. He cannot stand lies and malice. Satan has sown the seeds of lies into people’s minds to such an extent that many Christians do not consider lying a sin.

They justify that lying is better than hurting people by saying something they wouldn’t like to hear. Instead, you need to ask whether lying would praise God. Would lying shine Christ inside you? Would lying shine Jesus in the person you are lying to or about?

Paul explains in verses 9-10 that we are to put off the old man WITH his deeds and put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him. Therefore, renewing your mind in the knowledge of God is the most important strategy for a Christian.

What is the meaning of renewing your mind? Adopting a kingdom mindset is renewing your mind. What is a kingdom of God mindset? Aligning your thoughts and deeds according to the word of God is having a kingdom of God mindset.

How do I renew myself spiritually? By reading and meditating on the word of God daily, you can renew yourself spiritually. Where in the Bible does it say to renew your mind daily? What does the Bible say about spiritual renewal? Romans 12:2 (NKJV) says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

What does it mean to renew your mind with the word of God?

  • First, read the scriptures that guide the area of your life you want to change.
  • Then repeat those scriptures in your mind over and over again until they become part of your belief system.
  • Listening to sermons that reinforce your new change of mind,
  • Talking about this new change (kingdom mindset) with fellow believers and
  • Finally, implement that kingdom mindset in the area you want to change.

How do you give your mind to God? By laying all your thoughts on the altar and telling God to help you renew your mind by demonstrating it in your deeds. It is one thing just to say you give it all to God; it is another to obey God’s word and follow it truly. Complete submission is how you give your mind to God.

The ultimate goal of renewing your mind should be to see Christ in you (verse 4) and see Christ in others (verse 11). Paul gives clear instructions in verse 11 that everyone is one and no one is greater or smaller. Neither financial status, nor social status, nor any race, nor following any traditions can make anyone superior to another. The only truth remains that Christ is all and is in all! The more we keep this in the forefront of our minds, the more peaceful our lives will be!

Colossians 3 Life Application: verses 8-11

What can we learn from Colossians 3:8-11? We can learn six life application lessons from this passage explaining the first theme of Colossians 3: Old man vs. new man.

  1. Christians should put off anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, and filthy language out of our mouths; these are the sins committed against people.
  2. Christians should replace their old thinking pattern and live with a new way of thinking and living.
  3. Christians should renew their mind with the knowledge of the word of God.
  4. Adopting a kingdom mindset and complete submission is how you give your mind to God.
  5. The ultimate goal of renewing your mind should be to see Christ in you (verse 4) and see Christ in others (verse 11).
  6. Neither financial status, nor social status, nor any race, nor following any traditions can make anyone superior to another.

Colossians 3:12-17 Commentary and Bible Study

Colossians 2:12-17 (NKJV) – “12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

In this passage, Paul explains what it means to live as the new man who is raised with Christ. This can be considered a checklist for Christians to live by. So let’s dig into each verse.

What does Colossians 3 12 mean? In verse 12, Paul calls the Colossian church the “elect” of God. This is something to be really proud of, but at the same time, it comes with a lot of responsibility. The elect of God is holy and beloved to God. Wow! It feels so nice to be called holy and beloved. But, as Christians, it is our responsibility to maintain it!

Paul tells the Colossians church to literally “put on” the qualities he lists. These qualities are hard to adhere to in this day and age. But, with the help of the Holy Spirit and continuous renewing of the mind, it is something that we can work towards.

In verses 12-14, Paul tells the Colossian church to “PUT ON”:

  • Tender mercies
  • Kindness
  • Humility
  • Meekness
  • Longsuffering
  • Bear with one another
  • Forgive one another, as Christ forgave you
  • LOVE – which is the bond of perfection above everything else

In verses 15-16, Paul tells the Colossians church to “LET”:

  • The peace of God rules their heart
  • The Word of Christ dwell in them richly in all wisdom “TO”:
    • Teach and admonish one another
    • Sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs,
    • Sing with grace in their hearts to the Lord.

In verse 17, Paul tells the Colossians church to “DO”:

  • Everything in the name of the Lord Jesus
  • Thanksgiving to God the Father through Jesus

This seems to be quite a list, but this is something that is expected by all Christians who are called the “ELECT” of the Lord. Although this seems complicated, Paul gives two tips in verse 15, which would make it easier for Christians to follow the checklist provided by Paul.

What is the meaning of Colossians 3 15?

In verse 15, Paul advises the Colossians church to:

  1. “LET” the PEACE of God “RULE” their hearts

Christians struggle with putting on kindness, forgiveness, and love mainly because of the inner pressure of conflicting thoughts. That pressure is because of the “LACK” of peace in the situation. If Christians can “LET” the peace of God rule their hearts, then it would be easier to “PUT ON” the qualities of the new man.

But how can you “LET” the peace of the Lord come in pressured circumstances?

  • First, by completely submitting the situation to God.
  • Second, by soaking in His presence and praying about it
  • Third, asking for His peace to come into the situation
  • Fourth, not leaving His presence until you sense the real peace in you.

2. Be thankful.

Thankfulness is a lifestyle! It should be part of every Christian’s daily life. But, it is not always easy to be thankful, especially when situations are not going as anticipated or sudden challenges flood your lives.

That’s when Christians should keep reminding themselves of the scripture Romans 8:28, “All things work together for good to those who love God and to those who are called according to His purpose.”

This verse should give Christians confidence that no matter the situation, God can turn it around for their good. When Christians believe in this WORD from scripture, thankfulness can be a lifestyle!

In verse 17, Paul advises the Colossians church to say and do everything in the name of the Lord. This is a BIGGIE!! If we can practice this, God will be at the forefront of everything we say and do! This will also keep reminding us that our lives on this earth are only FOR Jesus, THROUGH Jesus, and BY Jesus.

Living in this truth will keep Christians in a different zone altogether, where they will be constantly reminded of the temporal nature of the situations and overall life on earth itself!

Colossians 3 Life Application: verses 12-17

What can we learn from Colossians 3:12-17? We can learn seven life application lessons from this passage explaining the first theme of Colossians 3: Old man vs. new man.

  1. Christians are called the “Elect of God,” holy and beloved.
  2. As the “ELECT of God,” Christians have a great responsibility.
  3. Christians should “PUT ON” the qualities of the new man – tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering, bearing with one another, forgiving one another, as Christ forgave you and LOVE, which is the bond of perfection above everything else.
  4. Christians should “LET” the peace of God rule in their hearts.
  5. Christians should “LET” the Word of God dwell in them richly in all wisdom.
  6. Christians should do and say everything in the name of the Lord.
  7. Thanksgiving should be a lifestyle for Christians.

2. Family Order and Work Order (Colossians 3:18-25)

Colossians 3:18-25 (NKJV) – “18 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. 20 Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is pleasing to the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. 22 Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in the sincerity of heart, fearing God. 23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for[a] you serve the Lord Christ. 25 But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality.”

What are the main points of the reading Colossians 3 18 25?

In this passage, Paul talks about family order and work order. During those times, things were not going well at home. Therefore, the order needed to be addressed and aligned according to Christ in every relationship.

Paul gave instructions for:

  • Wives to submit to their husbands
  • Husbands love their wives
  • Children to obey their parents
  • Parents do not provoke their children and
  • Bondservants/Employees (in the modern world) to work as if working for the Lord

In the modern world, it is more for employees working for employers. In those times, slaves were part of life. Many slaves were living in homes, and they were mistreated and had no say in anything. After Jesus came, everything changed. Paul explains Christ’s order in the family and work.

What does Colossians 3 18 mean? In verse 18, Paul speaks to all the wives in the houses of the Colossians church. Paul says that wives are to be submissive to their husbands.

What is a submissive wife according to the Bible? What does it mean for wives to be submissive?

Paul explains this by stating two important points:

  1. Submissive to OWN husbands

Wives are ONLY to be submissive to their own husbands. This is a big point that Paul made because this is specifically only for wives. This does not generalize women to be submissive to all men.

It is only for her OWN husband. It is also important for all men to note that they should not expect women to be submissive to them in general. Also, this should not be a reason to keep women from holding high positions in the work world.

2.  As fitting to the Lord

The order of husband and wife is of the order of Jesus with the church. That order fits the Lord because it is the order created by God. This order does not make wives inferior to husbands or women inferior to men, but it is a role on this earth in the order created by God.

In verse 19, Paul tells the husbands to love their wives. The word used for love in this context is agape love. The kind of love that God has for people. This kind of love caused God to send His only begotten Son as a sacrifice.

Husbands are to love their wives like Jesus loves His bride(church). Yes, wives are to be submissive to husbands but not in a way that husbands demand submission. When there is love in a relationship, wives will happily be submissive to their husbands, not as an obligation but out of love.

In verse 20, Paul instructs children to obey their parents in all things as it pleases the Lord. Most parents demonstrate agape love for their children most of the time. It is a relationship meant to be the purest in this world. The kind of love, care, and concern parents have for their children is near to what God has for everyone.

So, children of Christian homes are instructed to obey their parents in everything. Sometimes, it is difficult to obey parents in everything. Still, with their life experience and maturity in Christ backed up by their immense love for children, they make the best representatives of heaven for children. But, there is a caveat in verse 21.

What does Colossians 3 21 mean? First, parents should not provoke their children because they may get discouraged. Since children look up to parents for everything, the words they speak to children become their reality. They believe everything their parents say, and if parents’ words or deeds provoke children, Paul says, children will get discouraged. It will affect their self-esteem, confidence, and zeal in life.

It is the responsibility of parents to discipline their kids, teach them the way they should go, teach them the word of God, and shape their character. But at the same time, all these things should be done without provoking children or discouraging them.

In verses 22-25, Paul addresses bondservants, who are employees working in an organization in the modern world. Paul describes the work order to align it with Christ.

Paul instructs bondservants/employees to:

  • Obey their masters/employers in all things
  • Not only when they are watching but even when they are not watching
  • Not to be people-pleasers
  • Serve with sincerity of heart
  • Fearing God
  • Serve with all heart
  • Serve as if to the Lord and not people

What does Colossians 3 verse 23 mean? Again, Paul states that Christians are to do everything unto the Lord and not to people. Paul explains the same which he described in verse 17, again implying our lives on earth are temporal, and everything here is in conjunction with God.

We play a role here in different facets of life, BUT our master, father, God, husband, friend, everything is God. So if we can practice this, God will be at the forefront of everything we say and do!

In verse 24, Paul explains why we are to do everything for God. He says that everything comes from God, and He is the reward of our work on earth. Therefore, be in any role in life; we should do it for the Lord. God will give us our inheritance on earth and in heaven.

In verse 25, Paul warns the bondservants/employees that they will be judged and repaid according to their works. He says that if they do anything wrong, God will repay them because God is not partial but is just. He will reward everyone according to their work.

Colossians 3 Commentary John Macarthur – Colossians and Philemon MacArthur New Testament Commentary: Volume 22

In conclusion, in Colossians 3 Commentary and Bible Study, we have learned some amazing insights from Paul. As Christians, we are to put off the old man and put on the new man after accepting Christ and taking baptism. We are to renew our minds in a way that everything points to Christ in us and everything points to Christ in others because Christ is all and in all.

Our Christians living should be based on verse 4, which is Christ, whose life is to appear so that we also appear with Him in glory. In other words, everything about us and others should point to Jesus. Paul also explained how family and work order should be here on earth.
