The second chapter of Colossians starts with Paul talking about his great conflict. Paul says that he has a great conflict for the Colossian church. What is this conflict that Paul is talking about? Paul was not in conflict with other people for the Colossian church. Instead, he had an internal conflict in the spiritual realm. In other words, he had a burden for the Colossians church.
It was his concern for the Colossian church as they were drifting away. It is the conflict that we could also call spiritual warfare because Paul knows that the principalities of this world were behind the false doctrine breeding inside the Colossian church, which needed to be dealt with and defeated. We too as Christians should be burdened for other Christians in need. We should stand in the gap for other Christians and intercede for them.
Paul wrote this letter to the Colossian church, whom he had never met nor seen, yet he had this agape love and concern for them and was deeply involved in getting the Colossian church back on track with the correct doctrine. The ancient commentators and theologians had mixed views about the Colossian heresy’s exact nature and origin. But, regardless of the origin, it is evident from Paul’s letter that it had Jewish, Greek, and Gentile elements.
The Greek, Jewish, and Gentile teachers mixed their doctrine from their traditional practices and perverted their minds, leading them astray from Christianity’s very foundational principles.
Paul says these doctrines were based on this world’s principles and not heaven. What are the basic principles of the world mentioned in Colossians? The values of this world speak about doing things to earn salvation and include some practical ways that do not align with the principles of Christianity.
How were people taken captive, according to Colossians 2:8? The practical ways which mixed into the Colossian church’s belief system sounded intelligent and made sense to the natural brain but were very much against what Christ preached. Those things led the people astray and away from Jesus as the center of their belief system. Paul clearly states that all they needed was Jesus and nothing more.

From the preceding verses, Paul addressed the main doctrinal issues and laid a foundation for Christ being the Godhead bodily. In the following verses, Paul explains how we are complete in Christ as the Godhead and lack nothing.

Colossians 2:9-10 Commentary

Verses 9-10 are a splendid explanation of Jesus as the Godhead! In Him, everything dwells in fullness. We are complete in Him, period! This profound statement explains everything completely. There is nothing more or less needed apart from Christ. Jesus, as the Godhead, is the full deity.
The ancient scholars thought that much of the false teaching in the Colossian church revolved around separation between the spiritual world and the physical/materialistic world.
Paul says that Jesus is the head of all principality and power. By saying this, Paul is explaining that Jesus is not a junior god or a lesser god or one of the gods who could save humanity, but Jesus is THE ONE and ONLY God who can save humanity.

Colossians 2:11-12 Commentary
Colossians 2:11-12 – “In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.”
The Jewish tradition of circumcision was always a concern for the early Christians. It was hard for the Jews to overcome the fact that they did not need circumcision anymore. However, the tradition of circumcision was part of Jewish customs for generations. When something has been ingrained in you for centuries, it requires a lot of unlearning before we learn the true meaning of circumcision after Jesus’ birth and crucifixion.
Paul had been dealing with this right from the beginning of his ministry. Speaking against following the Jewish traditions as Christians was one of the main reasons that put Paul in custody, eventually leading to the Romans persecuting him. Paul wrote many letters from the Roman custody, one of which is this letter to the Colossians.
Paul says that we are circumcised in Jesus spiritually, and there is no requirement to perform it as a physical act. However, the Jewish teachers had brought circumcision into the church, and the Colossian church, mainly Gentiles, was being swayed away.
What does Colossians 2:12 mean? Paul says in verse 12 that we are circumcised in Christ through baptism. The act of baptism buries our old sinful self in water, and we are raised completely new without sin by faith. God circumcises us by burying us with Christ through baptism. It is a work of God and not humans.
What Paul means is that physical circumcision has no added value to salvation, but the act of baptism does! It is also important to note that Paul does not say that circumcision and baptism are the same.
Traditional circumcision was the act of “cutting off” the foreskin of the physical body. Spiritual circumcision is also “cutting off,” but here, it means cutting off our old sinful self. We are in the new covenant with Christ, which requires the circumcision of the heart.
The Old Testament also talks about the circumcision of the heart. Deuteronomy 10:16 (NKJV) says, “Therefore circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and be stiff-necked no longer.”
Deuteronomy 30:6 (NKJV) says, “And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul, that you may live.”
Paul clarifies in verses 11-12 that we are circumcised in Christ by burying with Him in baptism and raised with Him through faith.

Colossians 2:13-15 Commentary
Colossians 2:13-15 (NKJV) – “13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”
Paul says in verse 13 that we were dead because of our sins and the uncircumcision of flesh before Jesus. But because of the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, we are now made alive together with Jesus. Paul makes a fantastic point here that now, we are alive in Christ! This means that if we are not in Christ, we are dead! Because of our sins, we were dead! Without Christ, there is no alive “us”! Wow!! That is something we need to live by every single day as Christians!
Also, it is essential to note that God did not give us life with Jesus as “kind” given to a beggar. It is a HUGE sacrifice of His own Son Jesus Christ as a ransom BECAUSE God loved us so much! God has actually given us sonship in His Kingdom WITH Jesus, THROUGH Jesus, and FOR Jesus.
What does Colossians 2 verse 14 mean? Paul says in verse 14 that our sins have been forgiven in a way that the handwriting of requirements that were against us was wiped out. What does handwriting of ordinances mean? In legal terms, it is a list of allegations on a person who either needs to be persecuted or a ransom is to be repaid to the person to whom the damage was done.
Humans need to pay a ransom to God or be put to death. But, the ransom required to repay the damage is beyond human capacity. Humans cannot repay God in their own capacity, no matter how hard they try. Only Jesus, who was completely human and completely God at the same time and sinless, had the capacity to pay the ransom for the handwriting of the requirements against us.
Jesus gave Himself as a sacrifice to pay for the allegations against us. So, who was nailed to the cross? Along with Jesus, our allegations were nailed to the cross. Jesus has taken our handwriting of requirements out of the way by nailing them on the cross.
Were the 10 Commandments nailed to the cross? The 10 commandments were the law given by Moses on which the moral life of Jews was stranded. In a way, we could also say that Jesus was paying for every commandment broken by humans by nailing their transgressions on the cross.
Paul says in verse 15 that by nailing our handwriting of requirements, Jesus disarmed the principalities and power that were over us because of our sin. Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection made a public spectacle for satan and his followers. Jesus triumphed over death, won over satan, triumphed over sin, and reconciled humans to God!
Paul is making an open statement here that this world’s principalities and powers have no authority over us anymore. Because, now, we belong to God. Our ownership from satan because of our sin has been bought with a price, and our relationship is restored with God.
In other words, the principalities of this world don’t have the weapons to use against Christians because they are disarmed. We wear the stamp of the blood of Jesus on us, which makes us completely holy. But, the weapons for the unbelievers are not disarmed. Satan can use his weapons on unbelievers. They are not exempted until they wear the mark of the blood of Jesus on them.
But, satan cannot do anything to us. He can only scare us like the scripture in 1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV), “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”
We need to be vigilant but not be scared away by them because they do not have any power over us. We wear a stamp of the blood of Jesus over us, which makes us completely holy. Satan cannot put any allegations on us; he only has so much authority over us and how much we give him. If we walk in the Godhead of Christ, then satan cannot touch us, but if we allow satan to take a foothold over our lives, then we will allow him to play with our lives.
Jesus made a public spectacle of the principalities and powers of this world. Jesus publicly declared triumph over them. This is a BIG encouragement to all the believers who live in fear of the devil. Christians live in fear of the devil. Christians should be bold and brave, knowing that the creator of this world has publicly triumphed over satan and made us victorious forever with Him.
It was a HEAVY price paid by Jesus. It would be impossible for us to contemplate how satan and his followers would have attacked Jesus on the cross, thinking they had won over Him. But, Jesus’ victory was a slam on their faces because now they know they are defeated and are damned forever.
Paul mentions in 1 Corinthians 2:7-8 (NKJV), “7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, 8 which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.”
Had the principalities and the powers of this world known that they would be defeated on the cross, then they wouldn’t have crucified Jesus on the cross. They called for their own defeat! The mystery which is Christ in you- the hope of glory is a slap to the enemy’s defeat.
Colossians 2 life application: verses 13-15

- God loved us so much that he gave His son a ransom for our sins.
- Jesus’ resurrection made a public spectacle for satan and his followers by triumphing over death and triumphed over sin.
- Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection disarmed the weapons of the principalities of this world, so they have no power over us anymore.
Colossians 2:16-19 Commentary
Colossians 2:16-19 – “16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. 18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19 and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God.”
In verse 16, Paul cautions the Colossians church to beware of the people judging them about food and drink. Or even about following certain days such as sabbath or new moon. These religious and legalistic things have no contribution towards attaining salvation.
Paul says in verse 17 that the actual substance is Christ. Everything is about Him and not about following some days or restrictions on food. In verse 18, Paul again emphasizes that the Colossian church should not be cheated by false teachers telling them to follow certain things to get the reward. Paul says that this false humility is of no value in Christianity.
Paul warns them not to worship angels of any kind. Worshiping angels has got nothing to do with Christianity. It comes from the pagan religions, which believed that angels are the mediators of God.
Even in the modern world, angelic worship is followed by many pagan religions. Some religions even worship saints as mediators between them and God. In Christianity, only Jesus is the High Priest and the way of reconciliation to God. Christians need to base their belief system on Jesus alone.
Paul says in verse 19 that when Christians hold on to Jesus as the Godhead, we as His body are nourished and knit together in joints and ligaments. As a result, we grow WITH the increase in the wisdom that comes down from Him. This is such a profound statement. It is so important for us to understand Jesus as the Godhead and how we, as His body, increase.

3. Paul’s Encouragement to the Issues of the Colossian Church (Colossians 2:20-23)
Colossians 2:20-23 (NKJV) – “20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations— 21 “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” 22 which all concern things which perish with the using—according to the commandments and doctrines of men? 23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and [n]neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.”
What does Colossians 2/20 through 23 mean? Paul is saying that, as Christians, the basic principles of this world do not govern us anymore. None of the things that the world claims are needed to purify ourselves. Christians do not need to do anything pertaining to the world to earn salvation.
Paul says that although we live in this world, we are not of this world anymore. We are heavenly beings governed by Jesus as our Godhead, and we, as the body of Christ, function in this world based on the knowledge and wisdom from heaven.
The world’s regulations of not touching some things or not eating some things do not apply to us as Christians. Paul says these restrictions are temporary, so they have no eternal significance.
Paul says that these world restrictions do seem wise in the carnal sense. But fleshly wisdom cannot attain eternal salvation. Self-imposed religion is having rules and regulations in the natural world, hoping and believing that humans can earn salvation to reach God. But Christianity has little to do with humans earning salvation. Christianity is God freely gifting salvation because of His love for them in a way that allows humans to reach God through Jesus.
Living a Christian life is more about putting your faith into action and less about living within rules and regulations of a carnal nature.
Colossians 2 life application: verses 20-23

He ends the chapter by encouraging the Colossians church. How did Paul encourage the Colossians? He told them not to be worried about worldly and temporary things like food and drink. He advises them to live like heavenly beings and not be concerned about following the carnal religious regulations. In short, Paul said that all the Colossians church needed was Jesus and nothing more!
